In late July 2001, my local newspaper ran a small article about my project of documenting cemeteries in Albuquerque, NM and asked for volunteers. About 15 people responded that they would like to help. I scheduled a meeting for September 12, 2001. I will never forget that date because it was the day after September 11 and it was too late to cancel! Almost everyone came anyway. We were a very stunned and disoriented group that day. But we discussed the project and it gave us a focus and direction for the future. Our first day on cemetery grounds was October 1, 2001 and we have continued to meet 5-7 times each month since then. Not only do we document Albuquerque (Bernalillo County) but include all of the state now. All of us have a strong feeling that we are preserving our past for our future.
